Firearms Application Process & Requirements

Firearms ID Card (Initial or Replacement) and Handgun Permits

To begin the new online NJSP Firearms Application and Registration System (F.A.R.S.) you will need to click here NJSP F.A.R.S.  https://www.njportal.com/NJSP/FARS

Please ensure that the Montville Township ORI number is correct on the form and all information provided. If an incorrect ORI number is entered on the form, you will NOT receive a firearms ID card or a permit to purchase. You will then have to re-apply using the correct ORI Number and pay for the process again. A refund cannot be issued. 

The Montville Township Police Department ORI NUMBER to be used by Montville Township residents ONLY is: NJ0142100 

If you have never been fingerprinted before for firearms purposes, you will need to go for fingerprinting with the Universal Fingerprint form that will be generated after successful submission of this form. However, if you have been fingerprinted before for firearm purposes, upon completion of this form and payment, you would have completed both the S.T.S 033 and 212A requirements.

You will be receiving automated email updates throughout the new process.

Notify your references that the F.A.R.S. system will email them the reference questions to be answered. Your references will be able to complete the questions using a smartphone/tablet or computer. Please advise them to complete the questions immediately to progress your background investigation.

Payment for your Firearms Identification Card and Pistol Permit(s) whichever you have selected will be collected at the time of pick up. Please see below traditional process for more information regarding fees.

Fees:

•  $50 for the Firearms Identification Card 
  •  This one time fee is payable to Montville Township Police Department and may be either a check, cash, or money order. The ID card is good for as long as you remain eligible to own a firearm in the State of New Jersey and reside at the same address.
•  $25 for each handgun permit 
  •  You will need one permit for each handgun you wish to purchase. 

Concealed Carry Permit Application Instructions

To begin the new online NJSP Application for Permit to Carry a Handgun you will need to click here NJSP Concealed Carry https://www.njportal.com/NJSP/ConcealedCarry/

Please ensure that the Montville Township ORI number is correct on the form and all information provided. If an incorrect ORI number is entered on the form, you will NOT receive a permit to carry a handgun. You will then have to re-apply using the correct ORI Number and pay for the process again. A refund cannot be issued.

The Concealed Carry Permits service allows for online submission of both initial and renewal applications. Approved applications are due for renewal every two (2) years. Renewal applications can be submitted up to four (4) months before the expiration date. Concealed Carry Permit applicants need to have been fingerprinted for firearms purposes in New Jersey and assigned an SBI number before they can apply for a Concealed Carry Permit. If you have never been fingerprinted for firearms purposes in New Jersey before, start with an application for an Initial Firearms I.D. card. Please follow the instructions listed under “Firearms ID Card & Handgun Permits”. 

What Will I Need for Submitting an Initial Concealed Carry Permit Application?

• SBI Number
• Upload of recent photograph (on a light background including head and shoulders)
• One (1) training record completed within the past two (2) years, instructor name, and qualification date
• Personal Information: including Social Security Number and Driver's License Number
• Background Information
• For Armored Car Applicants: Uploaded Employment Letter
• Contact Information for four (4) non-family related references
• Information on handguns to be carried
• If you have lived outside of the state of New Jersey in the last ten (10) years, please fill out form SP-066 (Consent for Mental Health Records) and upload it to your application.

What Will I Need for Submitting a Renewal Concealed Carry Permit Application?

• SBI Number, Last Name and Date of Birth for validation
• One (1) training record completed within past two (2) years, instructor name, and qualification date
• Any updates to Personal Information
• Upload of recent photograph (on a light background including head and shoulders)
• Background Information
• Any updates to Handgun Information
• If you have lived outside of the state of New Jersey in the last ten (10) years, please fill out form SP-066 (Consent for Mental Health Records) and upload it to your application.

Fees:

•  $150 for the Permit to Carry a Handgun 
  •  Payable to Montville Township Police Department and may be either a check, cash, or money order.
